Situated outside the walled city of Jodhpur, Umaid Bhawan Palace sits astride on Chittar Hill. Architectural Historian Tillotson has described it as: “the finest example of Indo-Deco”. In 1929, when the kingdom was famine-struck, Umaid Singh, the then ruler decided to construct this palace to offer employment to the people. The construction ended in 1943. A part of the palace has been turned into a museum and is open to the visitors.
