Kalatop Khajjiar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread over 30.69 square km near Dalhousie, and is a paradise for trekkers. For travellers, there is a 3 km long easy hike from Lakkar Mandi, which is a short drive from the town, to the top of a hill where Kalatop’s Forest Rest House is situated. Adjacent to the rest house is a well-tended lawn. This campus is set amidst thick deodar forest. If you walk around the campus, you will come across a few stalls where you can get your fix of tea and snacks. The hike from Lakkar Mandi isn’t very exerting and you traverse through the shadowy woods. You can also drive up in your car for a fee (INR 200 for a car), but then you miss most of the fun. Don’t carry food in your hands because that way you’d make yourself vulnerable to attacks from monkeys.
