There are a few similarities between the two towns of Kangra Valley: Bir and Mcleodganj. Both are monastic towns and have Tibetan settlements. But there are differences as well. While Bir is set on the valley floor, Mcleodganj is at a higher altitude making it a colder place. Mcleodganj draws tourists and pilgrims in hordes, but Bir is peaceful. In Bir, you are likely to come across more number of monks as compared to households. There are about four monasteries in the town and a few monasteries in the surrounding region. Here, Indian tourists are far outnumbered by foreign nationals. There are several guesthouses, homestays and meditation retreats in Bir. However, when it comes to upscale accommodations, there aren’t many choices. Bir is 73 km from Mcleodganj and 30 km from Palampur.
